MATH528 Lesson21: Sturm-Liouville problems

Definition. The second-order, homogeneous, linear problem for y:[a,b] defined by

{ (p(x)y')'+(q(x)+λr(x))y=0 k1y(a)+k2y'(a)=0 l1y(b)+l2y'(b)=0 ., (1)

with p,q,r:[a,b], and λ,k1,k2,l1,l2 is known as a Sturm-Liouville problem.

Clearly y(x)=0 is a trivial solution. The interest is in possible non-trivial solutions.
